How can this workshop help me with burnout?
With burnout being so prominent in healthcare, especially mental healthcare, sometimes the negative effects can spill over into our personal lives and relationships. To help minimize this as much as possible, it is important to have tools available to heal and foster self-compassion. Art can be a path to healing and by completing this workshop, you will learn how to:
Reduce stress and anxiety: Engaging in drawing can reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. According to Dr. Herbert Benson, art can elicit the relaxation response and lower stress.
Promote self-expression and communication: Art-assisted healing can provide a creative outlet for you to express and communicate your thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a nonverbal way.
Tap into your own creativity for improved well-being in your everyday life and create longevity in your career as a physician. The World Health Organization has covered an in-depth study on the benefits of art making on well-being.
How can I use this course to help my patients?
During this workshop, you’ll gain the tools to help your work with patients who may want alternative outlets of expression:
Foster emotional resilience by helping individuals develop coping strategies, manage emotions, and build emotional resilience
Express themselves, especially children and adolescents, who may not be comfortable with verbal expression. Drawing can lead to greater engagement.
Improve self-esteem, cope with trauma, depression, and anxiety
Enhance cognitive function: Drawing can enhance cognitive function, including memory, attention, and problem-solving skills
Drawing has been shown to significantly improve observational skills. As a physician, you will experience improved observational clinical skills with regular drawing practice.

Don’t worry if you don’t think you have any artistic talent. All you need for this workshop is a willingness to explore creative expression!
As clinicians, we have well-developed left brain power. The use of the right side of the brain is often neglected and pushed aside. To facilitate a growth mindset, drawing can help physicians to think creatively and develop new approaches to engagement with patients, incorporating the use of art-making and creative expression as part of their patient’s stress management. By taking this workshop, Dr. Bates will coach you through developing a deeper understanding of how you can increase your comfort level with art making, which can enhance empathy and greater connection in your professional and personal life.
Develop new right brain approaches to relieve stress
Manage stress and burnout while getting in touch with your creative side
These art-assisted healing techniques offer a form of mindfulness through drawing, allowing you to enhance your focus and reduce anxiety. You'll discover a new way to connect with yourself and the world around you.

VIRTUAL EVENT
MARCH 18, 12:00 - 3:30 PM EST
Materials
With just a couple of basic materials, a pen, and paper, as well as any other materials you have on hand can be used. We will be making meditative drawings that require no artistic ability. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a complete beginner, this workshop is a great way to get in touch with your creative side that is longing for connection. You don't need to be a Picasso or Van Gogh to benefit from the therapeutic power of art. There is no judgment here. The product is not important, it is the process that is most beneficial and the community that is formed as we work together.
During the workshop, we'll discuss the powerful connection between drawing and mindfulness. We will have some movement exercises as well as meditation. We'll demonstrate Zentangle-inspired art making, a beautiful and intricate form of line drawing that will help you relax and focus your mind. Afterward, we'll come together as a group to share our experiences and share the art that we've created.
Rest and Recovery
This activity will allow for time to relax and enjoy the connection with colleagues while learning a valuable technique to use with patients who may have difficulty with verbal expression, as well as in your day-to-day life. Art-based mindfulness and stress reduction techniques are becoming increasingly important for the physician and resident wellness programs, as burnout in the profession continues to rise. Art-making techniques have been shown to effectively address depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Often we don’t take time out for rest and recovery from the work that we do. Use this afternoon to relax and take time for yourself.
